Comments, travel tips, reminders and helpful information about the 2011 GSMDCA National Specialty from the members of Southbound Greater Swiss Mountain Dog Club.

"Southbound welcomes you!  Plans are well underway for the 2011 National Specialty in Clemmons, North Carolina.  We plan to take the best from past specialties and combine it with Southbound hospitality and local fare to create an extraordinary event.  The wine region of North Carolina is particularly beautiful in October.  Please join us in celebrating the Greater Swiss Mountain Dog."

"We are planning what we hope will be a memorable specialty full of fun and exciting competition.  We encourage you to stay the entire week and take advantage of as many events as possible.  The leaves should be in peak Autumn color so be sure to take in some mountain scenery.  You may also wish to check out some area attractions, such as wine tours, golf, historic sites, art galleries, gardens, and more.  Regardless of your level of participation or length of stay, we hope to see you at the 2011 National Specialty hosted by the Southbound Greater Swiss Mountain Club."

"We have many fun things planned for the 2011 National Specialty in North Carolina.  If you've never been to this area of the country, you will surely appreciate everything it has to offer.  The social events will incorporate North Carolina BBQ, wine from local vineyards, and other local fare.  I hope you will join us in Clemmons for a great JamBaroo!"

"If you have a chance, you may want to visit my favorite attraction in NC, the Biltmore Estate in Asheville, which is about 135 miles west of Clemmons on I-40.  It is always interesting and where else can you see a house that is 4 acres large and sits on 8,000 acres?"

"6th Street in downtown Winston-Salem is the 'Arts District'.  You can park and walk down the street visiting the various local artists' shops or have a cup of coffee at one of the Bistro type restaurants.  One of my favorite restaurants is Cities Bar and Grill.  I highly recommend the prime rib but I have enjoyed everything I have ordered whether it was for lunch, dinner or just a drink and an appetizer.  The website is www.citiesgrillandbar.com."

"There is a fantastic craft center on the Blue Ridge Parkway, just east of Asheville.....with a variety of goods to buy downstairs and a gallery upstairs.  Oh and when I was there in June 2010, I was waited on by someone who owns 2 Swissies!  There were a couple of craft demonstrations as well."

"History buffs will enjoy a visit to Old Salem, a restored Moravian community.  The town was settled in the mid-1700s and now features buildings and living history exhibits.  While there, be sure to buy some Moravian sugar cookies...or ginger cookies.  They are so thin and crisp and perfect for dunking in a cup of tea."
